The ANALYST project has published Deliverable 1.4 – “Cohesive and interoperable database”, a key step in building the project’s digital backbone for Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) assessments. The deliverable presents the methodological and technical work behind the development of a shared database that brings together environmental, economic, social and safety data in one interoperable system.
Developed under WP1, the database is designed to support the future implementation of ANALYST-DIGI, the project’s digital decision-support ecosystem. It combines data harmonisation, AI-supported extraction methods and dimension-specific structuring to create a common repository that can handle the complexity of SSbD assessments across the plastics value chain.
A major contribution of the deliverable is the creation of a structured data blueprint for the four SSbD dimensions. For safety, the database organises substance-related information such as hazards, risks and exposure. For the environmental dimension, it structures life-cycle inventory data in line with Environmental Footprint and LCA logic. Economic data are organised around life-cycle cost parameters such as prices, benefits and investment assumptions, while the social dimension captures indicator-based data linked to workers, local communities and society.
The deliverable also explains how AI and NLP tools are used to extract and harmonise data from multiple sources, helping address missing or fragmented information. These tools support the collection of safety, environmental, social and economic data and feed the database in a structured format, making it easier to connect heterogeneous datasets and prepare them for future platform integration.
By moving from preliminary Excel and CSV structures to a MongoDB-based document-oriented database, ANALYST has created a scalable and flexible environment capable of supporting interoperability, traceability and future digital deployment. Deliverable 1.4 therefore lays the groundwork for a robust data infrastructure that will help turn SSbD assessments into a more operational, transparent and decision-ready process for industry and stakeholders.
