This deliverable offers an overview of the theoretical background regarding the existing life cycle methodologies, hazard/risk assessment, criteria, and progress on SSbD useful for the development of the ANALYST-BOX project and its goals
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The ANALYST project aims to accelerate the transition towards a safer and more sustainable industrial value chain while encouraging and expanding the existing knowledge on the safe and sustainable by design (SSbD) framework. In this way, an integrated approach for holistic health, environmental, social, and economic impact assessment will be developed, operationalised, and validated with 3 different use cases covering the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) value chain, in response to the relevant and current needs of society, industry and government stated by the European Commission (EC).
The present deliverable intends to describe the work carried out under Work Package (WP) 2 - “Development of ANALYST-BOX”, which aims to conceptualise and consolidate the ANALYST-BOX. It will consist of methodology and associated guidelines, based on the most advanced and up-to-date concepts, methodologies, and framework. In particular, it presents the work developed in Task 2.1 - “Mapping and assessment of the progress on SSbD framework and the State of Art (SoA) existing life cycle methodologies and hazard/risk assessment”. It aims to map and assess the most up-to-date SoA of the progress on SSbD framework and the explored dimensions of the ANALYST integrated approach (such as health, environmental, economic, and social). The methodological approach performed included a survey and a virtual meeting with Coordinators of EU projects focused on SSbD to outline the most-up-to-date progress on the matter. Therefore, for each dimension of the ANALYST-BOX, a SoA was conducted (via literature review) to understand the main gaps and limitations of the existing methodologies and the recommendations, as well as future directions and needs to overcome the challenges and contribute to the advancements of SSbD. A particular focus was dedicated to the use of PVC in the construction and automotive sectors.
In this way, this deliverable offers an overview of the theoretical background regarding the existing life cycle methodologies, hazard/risk assessment, criteria, and progress on SSbD useful for the development of the ANALYST-BOX project and its goals. It gathers the most recent advances and agreed terminology in the European Union (EU) and worldwide scientific literature, the advances and directions of the EU and National projects, particularly, in the ORIENTING project.
