Exploring the Social Dimension of Safe and Sustainable by Design: The ANALYST Project at LCM 2025

At the 12th International Conference on Life Cycle Management (LCM 2025) in Palermo, researchers from the University “G. d’Annunzio” of Pescara presented groundbreaking work on integrating social aspects into the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework through the ANALYST project.

While environmental and safety assessments are well-established within SSbD, the social dimension remains underdeveloped. The study by Manuela D’Eusanio, Federica Silveri, and Luigia Petti aims to bridge this gap by exploring how Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) can be incorporated into the design of safer, more sustainable materials — particularly in sectors such as plastics and PVC.

Using a phased and expert-driven approach, the research team identified and refined social indicators through progressive stakeholder inclusion. Their work draws on insights from 18 EU-funded projects, highlighting both the lack of sector-specific social data and the need for standardized indicators to ensure consistency in future SSbD applications.

The findings underline the importance of holistic, iterative assessment methods that combine safety, environmental, economic, and social perspectives — a cornerstone of the ANALYST project’s mission to enable integrated life cycle sustainability assessments across industrial value chains.
